Towards A Region Of Short Distances
Registration Deadline: Friday, Sep 18, 2020
Submission Deadline: Friday, Sep 25, 2020

Much of the area within the central Puget Sound Urban Growth Area is auto-dependent. […] How do we incrementally reshape our region to eradicate urban automobile dependency? A “City of Short Distances”, in which most needs of daily life are a short walk or bike-ride away, is the logical path forward for our region. We seek ideas that explore seeding areas of the greater Seattle region plagued by poor walkability with incrementally developed “microneighborhoods” at walkable intervals to restructure our region.

‘What is to be asked?’ – Architecture and Urbanism Beyond COVID19, Open Call for Collaborative Research and Proposal
Register/Submit Deadline: Wednesday, Sep 30, 2020

What is the question to be asked now? In the crisis from living environment that we called earth, architecture and city are facing due to COVID19, What is To be Asked Platform_WTA Platform is set up, to reflect and gather wisdom from professionals, researchers and citizens globally. Each one of us should draw a map by gathering individual observation during COVID19, and through cooperation and alliance, we invite questions and topics that worth exploring deeply.

SENEGAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: “Sambou Toura Drame”
Register/Submit Deadline: Wednesday, Nov 25, 2020

Archstorming is calling for proposals to design an elementary school in Marsassoum, Senegal. The school is currently constructed of bamboo walls and zinc roofs and it is in very bad conditions. The classrooms rarely survive the rainy season and that results in the cancellation of classes and students failing their academic year. In this competition we will research innovative and low-cost construction techniques in order to replace this temporary school with built structures. One of the most important aspects of this competition is to inspire people so they can build their own houses using the same technique once the construction of the school has finished.

2021 Skyscraper Competition
Registration Deadline: Tuesday, Jan 26, 2021
Submission Deadline: Tuesday, Feb 9, 2021

eVolo Magazine is pleased to invite architects, students, engineers, designers, and artists from around the globe to take part in the 2021 Skyscraper Competition. Established in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition is one of the world’s most prestigious awards for high-rise architecture. It recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the implementation of novel technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organizations; along with studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution. It is a forum that examines the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, the skyscraper and the community, and the skyscraper and the city.

If you would like to contribute competitions, award programs, or calls for submissions that aren’t listed on Bustler yet, send them directly to our team to review. We may include them in next week’s roundup.

If you are curious about Bustler’s extensive advertising strategies for architecture and design competitions, reach out to us, and our team would be more than happy to help strategize with you.

BIG’s Relocated Serpentine Pavilion Opens as “Unzipped” in Toronto

BIG’s “unzipped wall,” which served as the 2016 Serpentine Pavilion in London, has been opened to the public in Toronto under the new title “Unzipped.” Having been transported to the city and rebuilt in collaboration with Westbank, new photographs by Derek Shapton show the completed pavilion standing as a temporary place of showcase and events in downtown Toronto.

“Unzipped” is the first Serpentine Pavilion to embark on a multi-city tour of this kind, before ultimately landing in a permanent home on the Vancouver waterfront.

Constructed along King and Brant Streets, and opened to the public on Saturday 15th September, “Unzipped” plays on one of the most basic elements of architecture: the brick wall.

The 46-foot (14-meter)-high and 88-foot (27-meter)-long pavilion serves as an architectural showcase during the day, before becoming a “destination for unique programming, dialogue, and events” by night.

To create the installation, over 1800 extruded fiberglass blocks were stacked on top of each other, parting to form an “unzipped” entrance to an interior cavern. While open in Hyde Park from June to October 2016, the pavilion attracted a record number of visits.

“Unzipped” will be open to the public through November 2018.

News of the pavilion’s opening comes shortly after BIG’s King Street West condo community was approved for development in Toronto.

Japanese Pavilion at 2018 Venice Biennale, to Address Accessibility to Resources

Japanese Pavilion at 2018 Venice Biennale, to Address Accessibility to Resources, A Drawing from A Little Bit of Beijing: 798

As part of our 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale coverage we present the proposal for the Japan Pavilion. Below, the participants describe their contribution in their own words.

In the 20th century, the industrialization of society raised productivity and brought us convenient life with economic growth. However, the change has made us adapt our lives into an industrial network and created the barrier between people and environmental resources. One of the main roles of the 21st-century architecture is to break the barrier and to realize higher accessibility to resources.

A Drawing from The Building of the Queensland House: A Carpenter’s Handbook and Owner’s Manual

We set a point of view on people, not industry, in order to understand livelihood ecologically and architecturally. This is called the Architectural Ethnography, and guidebooks are the social common tool. In guidebooks, an old but new, unique architecture (not ones dominantly defined by an ‘architect as a creator’) have been reported, from hybrid buildings within high density of city life to the space used for urban-rural exchange, fitted into their local contexts in Tokyo and throughout the world.

Based on these researches some projects to increase accessibility to resources around us are suggested. The purpose of this exhibition is to build platforms for active discussion of ecological issues in architectural and urban theory, and visualization of the 21st-century architecture.

The exhibition has 4 parts: 1. collecting guidebooks and mapping them, 2. analyzing and presenting the expansion of guidebooks (from Tokyo to other cities, from city to country, from survey to action), and interviews with producers of guidebooks, 3. reporting projects derived from guidebooks with miniature models, and videos, 4. creating “Yokocho” (bar and cafe alley), and keeping and posting regular reports on managing the Yokocho as a discussion platform for developing architectural and urban theory.
